Using WOWBugs in the Pre-College Classroom

WOWBugs can be used effectively in pre-college classrooms. Supply houses have them available. Carolina Tips, March 1997, has in it an article by Robert W. Matthews, Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, which discusses using these bugs in the classroom. Associated with the article is a bibliography of resources which includes the following:

  • Matthews, R. W., et al. 1996 WOWBugs: New Life for Life Science. Riverview Press, Athens, Georgia.

  • Matthews, R. W., et al. 1997. "Insects as Teaching Tools in Primary and Secondary Education." Annual Review of Entomology 42: 269-289.

This article discusses the use of insects in the pre-college science curriculum and offers an overview of the teaching methods which can be employed. An extensive bibliography lists 267 sources, primarily curriculum materials, making it an invaluable resource for any science teacher looking for materials and information.

  • Matthews, R. W. 1997 "Teaching Ecological Interactions with Mud-Dauber Nests." American Biology Teacher 59: 152-158.

Use the information in this article in conjunction with a study of WOWBugs or by itself. Dr. Matthews includes detailed information on how to use the mud dauber nests in the classroom. One of the parasites of mud daubers is the WOWBug, Melittobia digitata.

The book and periodical articles listed above can easily be obtained from your local library or through interlibrary loan if not available locally.
